winter solstice

Happy Solstice! In the midst of all the clouds and rain, the sky cleared tonight and we were able to observe the total lunar eclipse. The first total lunar eclipse to occur on the winter solstice since 1638! This photo was taken by Steven, seemingly almost by luck, since most every other photo we took appears blurry and strange. It’s a crisp, beautiful, starry night out there, and the moon looks amazing.

Today was the first (almost) day off I have had in quite a while. It feels awesome to finally begin to sink into the season of sharing. I love giving gifts, and especially making things for others. There are so many things I want to make for so many people. I am really keeping it simple though. I have refrained from buying anything but a few handmade gifts, and have plans to make some simple things from the heart, that I know will be useful and enjoyed. Some of these things might not be finished in time for Christmas, but that’s okay too.

Some of what I am excited about…

I am excited to make some home brew for my brother and sister in law (and for us! Even if it might be a while until we get to try it).

And some granola for my mom and sister, as well as a few other treats for family.

I am getting together a tea themed gift for each person in my family, which will include something like this. And this would have been a beautiful addition.

I have some linen on order, to make some bath towels for us, but these would be equally amazing.

I roasted some dill + lime cashews, and sweet + spicy rosemary almonds tonight. The almonds are somewhat similar to this recipe (minus the white sugar). I am hoping my munchies-loving family will enjoy them!

I also plan to bake some bread… yes, lots of edibles. When everyone seems to have more stuff than they even know what to do with, fresh home made treats is a great way to share.

Well, I’ll leave it at that for now. It’s no fun to reveal everything before gifts have been given. It’s almost 2 am, and just like this little guy, I am yawning and ready for bed.

Be back soon. Wishing you all a peaceful and nurturing time, as we gently move into a new season and a new year.

  1. Thumbly

Nurturing and food gift are so good, especially when handmade. I’m thinking about a “Hot chocolate” or “Hot tea” pack for friends and neighbours. Sometimes (very often) the simpler gift is the most appreciate. Happy Solstice, dear Abby!

Oh I love the picture of the moon. I looked for it, but the clouds and my timing were off. I agree that gifts from the heart, made by hand are wonderful for those recieving and giving. We had fun searching thrift stores for Christmas tins and mugs for our family and friends. Then we filled each of them with our favorite tea or hot chocklate mix and made cookies too. Merry Christmas and Happy Solstice Abby. Amber & co.
